(OLAM AGRI) – As part of our commitment to improving the quality of life in local communities, Olam Agri has commissioned a solar-powered water supply system and modern sanitation facilities at Bekoko Public School in Cameroon, benefiting more than 2,000 pupils, teachers and members of the surrounding community.
The project implemented includes the installation of a hybrid solar and electricity-powered borehole with a 3,000-litre water storage capacity, as well as the construction of a six-compartment, gender-segregated and disability-friendly toilet block comprising two toilets for girls, two for boys and two for teachers. The facility also features an access ramp to ensure inclusion for learners with disabilities. The initiative is designed to improve access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), while supporting better educational outcomes, health and dignity for children attending the school.
The commissioning of the new facilities was warmly welcomed by pupils, teachers and residents of the Bekoko community, who expressed appreciation for the transformational impact the project is expected to have. Access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation will significantly reduce the time spent fetching water, improve hygiene practices and contribute to the prevention of waterborne diseases. Demonstrating its commitment to long-term sustainability, Olam Agri has established a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee (WASHCOM) and school hygiene clubs to oversee the maintenance and responsible use of the facilities. Local technicians have also been trained to ensure the continued operation and upkeep of the water system.
Beyond the infrastructure, the project has delivered a range of complementary interventions, including the training of 100 students, 60% of whom are girls, and five teachers on personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, leadership and menstrual health education. The initiative has also strengthened waste management through the construction of a school incinerator, hygiene awareness campaigns and the distribution of waste bins. In addition, Olam Agri provided school supplies and scholarship support to vulnerable children, including learners from internally displaced families affected by the ongoing socio-political crisis in Cameroon.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Mulah Derrick, Principal of the Anglophone Section of Bekoko Public School, expressed gratitude for Olam Agri’s longstanding support to the institution. « For many years, Olam Agri has consistently supported our school and learners through the provision of educational materials and assistance to our teaching staff. Today, we are particularly delighted with the gift of a solar-powered borehole and modern sanitation facilities of exceptional quality. These facilities will greatly enhance the learning environment for all our pupils, including children with special needs and learners from internally displaced families. The project was implemented by Roots Suits & Empower, while water purification and quality assurance were carried out by BIOTEX LABORATOIRE SARL, ensuring that the water supplied through the system meets safe consumption standards.
